A stairchair is a product best bought before you desperately need it. There are programs that will help fund the purchase of a stairchair but, take time to research, apply for and be approved for. Money from private insurances and money from grants are available to the person who takes the time and puts in the effort to seek it out. There is even money from loans that are deferred as long as you stay in your home! Looking into funding options that are available to you as early as possible is truly one of the most important money saving strategies a homeowner can utilizes and control themselves.
Sadly Medicare does not cover stairlifts. Stairlifts currently are not considered a medical necessity. However, there are alternative options! I would like to note that these are options are not just for the residence of Los Angeles County, Ventura County and Orange county but, some are location based. 1) Veteran's Administration: Provides financial assistance to US veterans to assist with paying for their stair lift. Find out if you qualify for assistance by calling 1-877-222-VETS. Here are two links to help you further understand the HISA program. Call 1-800-677-1116. I called this number and had to wait between 15 and 30 minutes until I was directed to someone who gave me numbers to other places. This number is simply the first step of many which is why it is so important to start this process EARLY! 3) FHA (Federal Housing Administration): The FHA provides loans to help pay for your stair lift out of a mortgage insurance program. For more information, call 202-708-1112. 4) Jewish free loans. http://www.jfla.org/ You DO NOT HAVE TO BE JEWISH. Interest-free. If you receive a loan from JFLA, you pay back exactly the amount you received. There are no fees or extra charges. You must have two cosigners. Married couples are considered one cosigner, therefore they cannot each be counted as a cosigner. Couples must show proof of legal separation to be considered as two separate cosigners. 5) Companies that sell stair lifts: Stair lift companies may offer payment plans, or discounts on used merchandise. At Look Stairchairs we do offer used straight units when we have them in stock for those less fortunate. 6) Digital Federal Credit Union: Offers special loans to people with disabilities. A majority of homes in Los Angeles County, Ventura County and Orange County have a straight staircase. For some aging homeowners and renters a set of stairs, even a short set can start to seem like a daunting mountain to climb as mobily diminishes with age. Often in denial about mobility lose, people ignore signs from their body that it might be time to consider an alternative to walking up and down the stairs. For example, the banister and handrails that line staircases usually go untouched and unnoticed by most who have stairs in their home. However, as a family member ages the banister and handrails start to become a very necessary part of being able to use the staircase. Aging people start to find that they need the extra support of the handrail for balance and security to climb the once easy simple staircase. Fears of falling start to slowly creep into an aging persons concerns as knees start to grow weak and troubled. Every time a basket of laundry needs to be carried up or down the stairs the possible threat of falling becomes a very real reality.

As homeowners age climbing the stairs can become more difficult than it was when they first bought their beloved home... in some cases even climbing the stairs has become dangerous. A stair chair can be bought from a few different sources but, where is the best most reputable place to buy a stair chair? Stairchair manufacturers are located all over the world. How does a global product end up in your home? Stairchair manufacturers sell their chairs often in two ways. One way Stairchair manufactures choose to sell their chairs is to have people who work directly for them sell. Buying direct sounds like the best option to most people however, in this case because the stairchair manufacturer isn’t near you finding service for your chair may be problematic. The second and most common way Stairchair manufacturers choose to get their product to you is to endorses and train reputable dealers. A dealer is the best option for the reason that you will have a reliable place that is close to home to insure you will have the service you will need for your chair when you need it.

Why have a professional install your Stairchair? Here is what no one will tell you about what happens after you buy a stairlift. Having a professional install your stairchair is the best way to insure not only your own safety but, the proper operation of your chair as well. Every stairchair will eventually need to be serviced and may need replacement parts. Stairchair dealer's do not like assume liability for a chair that has not been installed by a trained professional. Getting a hold on parts can also be difficult without direct access to a manufacture that may not be in your area. The information you are about to read comes directly from the AEMA. The Accessibility Equipment Manufacturer’s Association (AEMA) does not support the installation or servicing of accessibility lifts by inexperienced persons. COMMENT In the past few years, there has been an increase in the concept of providing lifts over the internet and from storefronts or warehouses with the intent that the end-user (consumer) is expected to perform his or her own installation and servicing (Self-installation). The practice is most evident with stairway chair lifts, but vertical platform lifts and other accessibility lift models, both used and new are also available through this marketing method. AEMA does not support the concept of self-installation! Marketing to consumers via the internet or a storefront or elsewhere may initially appear to be acceptable. The perception is that it provides accessibility equipment at a lower cost for those who can least afford it. However, it may also create a hazard to the consumer! How does the consumer ensure that the equipment is installed: • In a safe manner? • in a manner that ensures operational safety? • in conformance with local codes and regulations? Providers of equipment that is marketed direct to consumers have a responsibility to ensure that it is installed and serviced by experienced technicians. Accessibility Lifts today are quite sophisticated both mechanically and electrically/electronically. It is not reasonable toassume that a person unfamiliar with lifts and their installation or service requirements would be aware of the potential hazards likely to be encountered if a lift is not installed or serviced correctly. With current technology, that knowledge is only available when experienced technicians are utilized. Some points of interest: • Many jurisdictions require a lift to be installed in conformance with local or National Codes. In many localities, the codes referenced are the ASME A17.1, the A18.1, and the NFPA70 (National Electrical Code). A consumer installing a lift would not be familiar with the safety requirements of the applicable codes such as clearances, electrical safety, proper anchoring, etc. Such non-conformance to the codes may make the installation unsafe. • Licensing and permitting required. Many jurisdictions require a lift to be installed by a licensed, trained technician and the lift inspected by the local authority having jurisdiction prior to placing it in service. Common sense would seem to dictate that the installation or servicing of any equipment intended to transport people should require the service of an experienced technician. This is especially true for the elderly and disabled members of our communities. • The potential hazards of “self-installation” apply to both used and new equipment. There are many “used” lifts available on the market today. It is the position of AEMA that all lifts, new or used, must be installed and serviced by experienced technicians. Look Stairchairs would like to present you with some tips for buying a stairlift. There are multiple Stairlift providers in Southern California to choose from. As you are evaluating your options make sure that any stairlift company you choose meets the following requirements: 1. Licensing: Make sure they are fully licensed in the State of California. Every stairlift dealer is required to have either a C-11 (Elevator) or a C-61 D-21 (Machinery and Pumps) California State Contractor’s License. Ask the prospective company to give you their license number and check them out at www.cslb.ca.gov. This is to help protect you from fraudulent and unscrupulous dealers 2. Payments: California Contractor Law states that a contractor can only ask for a down payment of 10% or $1000.00, whichever is LESS, before material is delivered to the job. If your stairlift dealer asks you for down payment which is larger than this, they are breaking the law. 3. Worker’s Compensation: If a company has employees, they must be covered by Worker’s Compensation Insurance. This is to protect you in the event that an installer is injured during the installation. The stairlift dealer will be able to give you their certificate of insurance. 4. Liability Insurance: This is to protect you in the event that someone is injured using the stairlift due to a substandard installation. The stairlift dealer will be able to give you their certificate of insurance for this also. 5. Cost: Every stairlift dealer has different fixed costs and profit margins they would like to maintain. It is most important that you get more than one estimate when purchasing a stairlift. When negotiating the final cost: A) Ask each dealer for their "lowest price" without identifying other dealer bids. B) Ask each dealer for their current service charge after purchase / warranty period ( IE. replace batteries) C) Remember, cost is just one of multiple factors you need to consider when choosing among providers. 6. Know the difference between a stairchair dealer and a stairchair manufacturer’s. For example Look Stairchairs is a Stairchair dealership that sells multiple stairchair manufacture’s products.
